Renewable Baseload Power for the Territory's Digital Future


The Northern Territory is rapidly establishing itself as the natural home for Australia's next generation of data centre development. As many as a dozen data centre developers are currently evaluating the greater Darwin region, drawn by the Territory's unique combination of available land, energy resources, political support and unmatched digital connectivity to Asia.


Major projects already announced include hyperscale AI data centre campuses proposed at Weddell, south-east of Darwin, targeting up to 2GW of dedicated power generation, and a separate one-gigawatt facility proposed for the Barkly region. Darwin's operating and planned data centres are supported by an expanding network of subsea cables connecting the city directly to Singapore, Jakarta, Japan and the United States — delivering the lowest latency to Singapore of any Australian capital.

Data centres share one defining requirement: reliable, affordable, around-the-clock power. The current wave of Territory proposals is overwhelmingly anchored to gas-fired generation. Allasso Energy offers what the market is missing — genuinely renewable baseload.


Allasso Energy's Position


Allasso Energy holds a Geothermal Exploration Permit Application in the Batchelor vicinity, approximately 40 kilometres south of Weddell, on existing transmission infrastructure. This location places the project within direct reach of Darwin's growing data centre precinct and the broader Territory grid, without the cost and lead time of new transmission corridors.


Allasso Energy's work program is designed to accelerate the delineation and commercialisation of this Northern Territory asset and deliver renewable baseload power solutions to energy users — including the hyperscale and edge data centre operators now converging on the Territory.


Why Geothermal for Data Centres


Geothermal energy is uniquely suited to the data centre sector:


24/7 baseload generation — unlike solar and wind, geothermal delivers constant output matched to the always-on load profile of data centres, with capacity factors exceeding those of any other renewable technology.


Zero-emissions credentials — as hyperscale operators pursue net-zero commitments, geothermal provides firm renewable power without the emissions profile of gas-to-power alternatives.


Small surface footprint — geothermal plants require a fraction of the land area of equivalent solar or wind capacity, and can be co-located near load.


Grid-connected advantage — proximity to existing transmission means Allasso Energy's Batchelor project can serve customers across the Darwin–Katherine system rather than a single off-grid facility.


The Geological Case


 Underpinning the work program is strong geological evidence that all the fundamental requirements for a commercial geothermal system exist within the basin. Previous studies have shown that the basement beneath the basin exhibits high surface heat flow, while the basin sediments include fine-grained formations capable of providing effective thermal insulation. This combination is optimal for the creation of a commercially viable geothermal resource — positioned precisely where the Territory's new digital economy needs firm, clean power.

Western Australia

 

Firming Renewable Power for Western Australia's Industrial Heartland


Western Australia's north-west is home to the most energy-intensive industrial corridor in the nation. From the Ashburton to Dampier, the region hosts world scale iron ore, LNG, ammonia and critical minerals operations all committed to deep decarbonisation while maintaining continuous, around-the-clock operations. Multi-billion-dollar decarbonisation programs are underway across the region's major miners, alongside proposals for some of the world's largest renewable energy and green hydrogen hubs.


The region's digital footprint is expanding in parallel. Edge data centres are now operating in the Pilbara to serve mining, energy and government customers locally, while Western Australia's data centre pipeline continues to grow, with new hyperscale campuses planned and industrial demand for uninterrupted power — including from data centre infrastructure — driving new generation investment across the region.


Every one of these energy users faces the same challenge: solar and wind alone cannot deliver the firm, continuous power that mines, processing plants, ports and data centres require. The market's need is firming and baseload — and that is precisely what Allasso Energy is positioned to supply.


Allasso Energy's Position


Allasso Energy is the holder of Western Australian Geothermal Exploration Permit GEP 50, and has been awarded three further Geothermal Exploration Permits in the onshore Carnarvon Basin. Critically, Allasso Energy's awarded permits cover the region with maximum firming and baseload offtake demand, spanning the energy-intensive Ashburton to Dampier corridor.

Allasso Energy's work program is designed to accelerate and support the commercialisation of geothermal energy in the form of firming, baseload power and heat across the broad range of industries currently operating or planned in the Gascoyne, Ashburton and Pilbara regions.


A Commercialisation-Ready Work Program


Extensive geological and pre-FEED engineering studies have been completed to underpin the development of these work programs. Each program is designed to optimise delivery of the right baseload requirement to the end user — whether supplementing solar and wind with renewable firming capacity, or providing proximal standalone power and heat solutions. Through this work, Allasso Energy has identified the most cost-effective pathways to deliver its solution to the renewable market.


Why Geothermal for the North-West


Firming that is itself renewable — geothermal firms solar and wind without recourse to gas or diesel, allowing energy users to reach genuine net-zero rather than offsetting fossil-fuelled firming.


Continuous baseload and industrial heat — geothermal uniquely delivers both 24/7 power and direct heat, matched to the load profiles of processing, port and data centre operations.


Proximal to demand — the Carnarvon Basin permits sit directly within the Ashburton–Dampier demand corridor, minimising transmission cost and delivering power where it is consumed.


Small footprint, high capacity factor — geothermal requires a fraction of the land of equivalent solar and wind capacity, with capacity factors exceeding any other renewable technology.


World-Class Resource Potential


 Available data, modelled for deliverability by Allasso Energy and its world-leading strategic partners, has determined significant world-class geothermal opportunities in the Carnarvon Basin. Allasso Energy has also completed studies on the Perth Basin, identifying highly prospective geothermal potential and establishing a clear pathway for future expansion.
